 The HOMEConnecticut Campaign

HOMEConnecticut is a statewide campaign aimed at increasing the stock of affordable housing in Connecticut. The campaign was created to preserve the quality of life and the strong, competitive economy that has distinguished Connecticut, but which is now threatened by a dramatic lack of housing affordable to working families and individuals. Leaders in business, banking, academia, land use, housing and government have come together as the steering committee of HOMEConnecticut to identify solutions to the state's housing affordability problems.

 The Problem

  • State housing prices have risen 70% from 2000 to 2007, more than 2 times faster than wage growth.
  • In 142 of Connecticut’s 169 towns, a family earning median income cannot afford the median sales price home.
  • Connecticut has lost a higher percentage of its 20-34-year-old population since 1990 than any other state, in large part due to the high cost of housing.
  • Businesses are beginning to experience labor shortages due to the lack of housing workers can afford.

The Solutions

  • Build and rehabilitate housing that workers, first-time home owners, young adults, and people on fixed incomes can afford.
  • Assist and encourage towns and cities to help create housing that is attractive, affordable and an asset to the neighborhood.
  • Increase state investment in housing development, which leverages private and federal resources and stimulates the economy.
